FEBRUARY NEWS

Dear Parents,

We may finally be in the home stretch of winter. The thought of spring time breezes and the scent of all the lovely flowers give us hope and the strength to get through these last months of winter.

I would like to take the opportunity to share the experiences our staff had during our most recent staff development day. Much of what we do is planned by our administrative staff and some is dictated by the state health department. CPR training was a big part of our day, and our teachers all went through training and then were tested. All passed with flying colors. The remainder of the day was comprised of various workshops. The first was a Music Workshop that was presented by two of our very own Preschool teachers, Jackie and JoAnne. We were taught about the importance of music and how to implement various types of musical experiences into our curriculum. We discussed using movement and dance, and using art as a way to express what we hear and feel while we listen to music. This was a wonderful workshop and all of the teachers left with practical musical activities that they have already begun to implement in their curriculum.

The next workshop was lead by Jill Edelman, L.C.S.W. Jill specializes in couples therapy and her presentation was entitiled "Parent Staff Crossroads: the Twists, the Turns, and The Challenges". In this workshop Jill helped our staff to understand the transitions that occur as parents drop off and pick up their children, as they cross over from being parent, to going off to work. Often this is a very stressful time and communication can sometimes be difficult. The staff worked on developing strategies for helping parents to move through these transitions with greater ease. We also discussed how "real life" situations impact each family greatly and tried to come up with practical ways to work with each individual child and their family. Later on in the day we did some role playing and actually acted out various scenarios that we encounter on a day to day basis. This was a very productive workshop, and one that we will continue to build on in future staff development day programs. Registration is now underway for the 2010/2011 summer and school year session. Please make sure to submit all necessary forms as soon as possible to secure a spot for your child for the summer and next year.
